Video game developers have to constantly use their imagination in order to make a product that will be interesting to people of all cultures, religions, and overall background. They are tasked with a job to make something that can be enjoyed by both the young and the slightly older. When the creators do a good job, consumers have a chance to forget about reality and dive into a fictional and magical world. This makes it a very rewarding job, as you know you can help someone forget about their problems and enjoy a world that you created.
However, when the video game developers come out with an idea that is too extreme, they are bound to get ridiculed for it. Not everyone can understand their vision when they make something that’s just too weird. With that being said, you should really take a look at the following 10 video games in order to see what we mean when we say ‘too weird.’
Simulator games have become really popular during the last several years thanks to games like Euro Truck Simulator, Kerbal Space Program, and Car Mechanic Simulator. Considering the popularity of these games, it was only right that someone decided to bring some weirdness into the genre. Thankfully, the people behind the Goat Simulator did this.
Although it’s an extremely weird game, it’s hard to ignore the fun times you will experience when playing it. The idea of a Goat Simulator was so surreal that many people doubted the game was real after the first trailer was released. Although the developers claimed the game was made in a couple of weeks and that it would be better if you’d spend money on a real life goat, it was still very successful because it was such a unique idea.
As you may have guessed, in this game you control a mosquito. The main objective here is to suck up as much blood as you can. You do this by terrorizing a Japanese household, and constantly finding the perfect time to strike. Sometimes, you even have to create distractions like turning the lights off by flying into a switch. Additionally, you also have to avoid people when they’re trying to occasionally smash you.
God only knows how the creators of this game even came up with this idea. I mean, can you even imagine pitching an idea that involves the player nurturing a pet fish with a human face that comes with no instructions (apart from the occasional clue you get from the narrator, Leonard Nimoy; yes, the actual Leonard Nimoy!). This means that you can only find out how to nurture it by trying out different things throughout the game.
After you get tasked with taking care of even more seaman, they begin to breed with each other and grow into some type of frogs that still have human faces, and we’re not even going to comment on that part of the game.
Released back in 1994, this game was only made available in Japan. Here, you play a mascot portrayed as a cool kid that rocks a hat on backwards and rides a skateboard. Oh, and there’s a bit of an advertisement for Coca-Cola involved, which you can easily pick up on considering how the protagonist is named the Coca-Cola Kid, he restores his health by drinking Coca-Cola, and no matter where you turn, you always see Coca-Cola!
However, we have to admit that the game does have a plot. Your teacher gets kidnapped, so you have to defeat enemies and save her. How original…
Shaquille O’Neal is a basketball legend that also managed to put out some popular music back in the day (his debut album even managed to go platinum). But, of course, you can’t be that successful and not make a few mistakes along the way. One of these mistakes was getting involved with this terrible video game.
Nevertheless, it got very famous over the years, after it became known for being one of the worst video games of all time. It got so popular that a recent crowdfunding campaign for a sequel was successful. Thankfully the new developers stated that the sequel will be nothing like the original.
Just because a video game is weird that doesn’t mean that it has to be bad, and the Playstation 2 classic Katamari Damacy is the perfect example of that. This game now has a cult following, thanks to the fact that it’s simply really fun to play. The main objective in Katamari Damacy is to roll a ball around. Oh, and the ball is able to attract all kinds of objects. The more objects you attract, the bigger it gets; and once it gets big enough, you actually get to use it as a celestial object. Despite the fact that this game was made on a shoestring budget, it still managed to be a success.
Weird games are present on all platforms, so it comes as no surprise something as bizarre as Enviro-Bear 2010 was made available on the iOS App Store. This video game looks like it was made using MS Paint by either a madman or a child. The game is about a bear that attempts to drive but can only do one thing at a time. This means that you don’t have the ability to press the gas and turn the steering wheel at the same time. However, it gets more challenging once you start dealing with things that fall into your car like rocks, fish, and hyperactive badgers.
No More Heroes
Although it was well received when it got released, No More Heroes is as weird as most of the games on this list. Especially considering that this is a Wii game, a platform that is mostly known for offering fun for the whole family. No More Heroes offers something completely different, thanks to the protagonist known as Travis Touchdown, a guy extremely passionate about both sword-fighting and his porn collection. Throughout the game, you get to fight against a number of challenging opponents.
LSD: Dream Emulator
In case you were wondering if the game resembles an LSD trip, the answer is yes. The game was inspired by the numerous dreams Hiroko Nishikawa (a guy that worked on the game) experienced. This is why the game is filled with unique dreams that can change depending on the countless factors present in every ‘level.’ Sometimes, you’ll experience creepy dreams, while at other times it may be something more pleasant. However, one thing is for certain, you’ll see and experience a lot of weird stuff.
Icarus Proudbottom & The Curse of the Chocolate Fountain
Now that you’ve seen the previous nine video games, you are officially prepared to take a look at this weird creation (although saying that this game is weird is clearly an understatement). Icarus Proudbottom is the protagonist of this game, and is known for being a young man that constantly defecates at such a fast rate that it makes him fly around the whole globe and even into space. Things get even crazier when he meets an owl that ends up being his weapon and spirit animal. Together, they fight numerous enemies, one of which is Barack Obama.
